Beer Fans Unit!:  Port Townsend Brewing Company

I'm going to assume I had you at "beer".  :)  Don't hate me, but I live just about a 90 seconds drive from the Port Townsend Brewing Company.  This brewery opened in 1997 with just two beers, and has now grown to what you see, and taste, today.

It doesn't get any fresher than having beer on tap at the place it is brewed.

The availability list may change slightly depending on when you stop in.  Today I went for a 5 sample beer flight of Strait Stout, Barley Wine, Port Townsend Porter, "Reel" Amber, Yoda's Green Tea, and my husband had one of his favs on the side, a pint of Single Hop India Pale.

This picture shows the different "heads" on the beer.  The Strait Stout (on the far left), and the Barley Wine next to it have the most pronounced "head" of this tasting.

The "Reel" Amber has notes of grapefruit peel.

The Single Hop India Pale on tap today had a citrus pith taste with a touch of orange juice notes.

Not pictured, but my favorite was the Port Townsend Porter.  Definitely malty, touch of smoke, and a slight hint of ash.

The Barley Wine was full on honey, bitters, and citrus pith.  I found the bitterness increased with each sip (not surprising given the  IBU level in this one.  IBU = International Bitterness Unit).

Yes, it is actually called Yoda's Green Tea.  Check out the lacing this leaves on the side of the glass. This was my 2nd favorite in the tasting line up with  lemon, green tea, grain cereal notes.  Well balanced, and smooth. This one is made with Bancha organic green tea.

Chocolate and espresso lovers will dig the Strait Stout.

A varied sampling like this will really help educate your palate to both recognize different styles of beer, but also to help you learn which styles you prefer.  If one of the tastings really stands out to you full pints are available as well.  In fact, many locals like to stop in just for a pint, or two.

Feel free to leave a comment on what your favorite style of beer is and where you go to drink it.  I would love to hear from you!

Thank's for reading!
